Airports enhance the travel experience with new/improved lounges

The trend of adding or upgrading airport lounges across the U.S. continues to spread. The New Orleans airport recently welcomed the opening of The Club MSY on the third level of Concourse A. This premium lounge features an eye-catching saxophone-shaped bar, chef-inspired cuisine and specially curated spirits. The Club MSY is the 24th lounge by Airport Dimensions and follows the recent opening of Club SJC at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Alabama’s Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will open its first premium lounge in Concourse B. The new facility which is slated to open in the fourth quarter will be operated by Primeclass which already offers lounges in Palm Beach, San Diego, New York and Washington D.C.

Delta will begin renovation work at its Sky Club located on Concourse A at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Delta said the work will be done in stages so that the lounge can remain open during construction.

Then, while not a traditional lounge, San Francisco International just opened its new Sky Terrace near Boarding Area G in the international terminal. This outdoor observation deck and terrace allows travelers to relax outside while still remaining within the secured area of the airport. The Sky Terrace features a stunning 180-degree view of the airfield along with comfortable chairs and tables so users can enjoy a snack. The airport plans to open a second observation deck located pre-security in Terminal 2 that will be accessible to the general public.

Does your driver’s license have a star on it?

REAL ID and tips for updating your identification at the DMV

As of October 1, 2020, Americans will be required to present REAL-ID compliant identification in order fly on U.S. commercial aircraft and to enter federal buildings. Many Americans, however, are still confused about what it takes to be compliant.

REAL ID-compliant identification includes state-issued driver’s licenses or ID cards that were issued using stricter REAL ID criteria. In most states, compliant IDs have a star on the upper right-hand side. IDs that have been recently issue but are not REAL-ID compliant typically are marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES”. Licenses and IDs that have not been renewed in several years are likely not REAL ID compliant. Check for the gold star to verify compliance.

If your state-issued licenses or identification does not have the gold star and you do not have another form of REAL ID-compliant identification to bring with you to the airport such as a valid passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) or other approved identification (for a complete list see https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification) you should start making plans to visit your local DMV to get your identification upgraded for federal use.

Tips for obtaining your REAL ID

  • Make sure your state is compliant. While most are already issuing compliant IDs, a few states are still working towards compliance. To check, visit https://www.dhs.gov/real-id.
  • Next visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles website for a checklist of required documentation. Typically, you will need either your passport or an original copy of your birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency and name change documentation if applicable.
  • See if your DMV offers appointments in addition to walk-in visits.
  • Some states also show real-time wait times at individual DMV offices so you can make an informed decision on when and where to go.
  • Check to see if your state allows you to complete the application online ahead of your visit to the DMV as another time saving option.

Don’t procrastinate. Waiting until the Oct. 1, 2020 deadline approaches will likely mean longer wait times at your local DMV.

Freebird saves travelers from the aggravation caused by flight delays

Adelman Travel has partnered with Freebird to provide our corporate clients with a solution that saves companies money while eliminating the stress caused by flight disruptions. According to research conducted by Freebird, travelers can expect five percent of flights to experience disruption due to weather, airline issues or other problems.  Freebird allows travelers affected by delays and cancellations to quickly rebook their flights while avoiding long lines, long hold times and expensive new tickets.

How it works: the simplicity of Freebird

A company determines which travelers will be protected by Freebird and pays a fee per ticket.  Once a disruption occurs, a traveler is notified via an alert to their mobile device.  After opening the alert, they are presented with multiple flight options.  The traveler simply clicks their desired flight and is immediately rebooked.  Freebird pays for the new ticket and processes the original ticket for a refund.

The benefits of Freebird:

  • Saves travelers an average of 4+ hours per disruption and enhances their productivity
  • Gets travelers to their destination every time
  • Relieves traveler stress and provides a better travel experience
  • Saves companies an average of $1,500 per disruption including traveler time and ticket costs
  • Works within a company’s travel policy and supports duty of care responsibilities
  • Integrates with Adelman Travel’s reporting and Ava mobile app

Corporate clients of Adelman Travel can sign up for Freebird by contacting their client success manager.

Heightened tensions with Iran prompt advisories elsewhere in the world

Increased tensions between Iran and the United States following the American airstrike that killed Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani has prompted a series of new advisories and Twitter updates from the U.S. State Department for multiple areas in the Middle East and beyond. U.S. citizens have been advised to suspend travel to Iran and Iraq. Newly issued advice urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to heighten tensions applies to countries including Bahrain, Burkina Faso, Georgia, India, Italy, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mali, Morocco, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and United Arab Emirates.

Travelers can stay abreast of the latest travel advisory updates by following the U.S. State Department’s Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/travelgov?lang=en.  The State Department also offers a convenient quick glance overview of current advisories on its map at https://travelmaps.state.gov/TSGMap/. International travel documents: what you need to know for 2020

There are several important updates regarding documentation requirements that travelers should be aware of as 2020 gets underway.

Real ID: The final implementation date for Real ID is quickly approaching. Citizens who plan to fly domestically in the United States starting this fall will need to have a REAL ID compliant form of identification by Oct. 1, 2020. Valid identification includes a compliant state issued driver’s license or ID, Passport, DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), U.S. Department of Defense ID or a handful of other specific government-issued documents.

As most travelers currently rely on their driver’s license or state-issued ID card for air travel, it is important to verify that you have a REAL ID compliant version of this documentation. Look for a gold star on it. While most states are now issuing REAL ID compliant identification, applicants should note that many still also offer the option of getting a traditional license or ID, which is typically cheaper and doesn’t require as much documentation. However, these will not be accepted by TSA agents for travel after Oct. 1, 2020.  Newly issued traditional ID cards with have “Not for Federal Purposes” printed on them.  If you still need to obtain Real ID compliant identification, you should apply early to avoid delays. Check with your local department of motor vehicles for additional information.

Global Entry: U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said that its backlog for Global Entry renewals has grown to 350,000 applications. Thus, the CBP has said that those who have submitted their renewal request before it expired and are still waiting for final approval will now have a full year of extended benefits while the application is still being processed. For travelers who are applying for Global Entry for the first time, or for those who let their original membership expire before filling a renewal application, it is recommended that you submit your request at least six months in advance.

ETIAS: Later this year, U.S. citizens will need to begin applying for a European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) approval for travel to any of the 26 Schengen zone countries starting Jan. 1 2021. The ETIAS is similar to the ESTA program launched in the United States in 2010. To apply, U.S. citizens will need to provide some basic information and must have a valid passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay. A small fee applies. Once approved, an ETIS is valid for three years or when the holder’s passport expires, whichever is first and is valid for stays 90 days or less. For more information on ETIAS, please visit https://www.etias.us/etias-us-citizens/.

American and British Airways to expand JFK’s Terminal 8

Joint venture partners American and British Airways have begun renovation and expansion efforts on Terminal 8 at New York’s JFK International Airport. The project will add 70,400 square feet of additional space while also enhancing existing space. Once complete, passengers will find nine new gates, including five designated for wide-body aircraft, a new high-tech baggage system, premium check-in areas along with new lounges, restaurants, and shops. The new space will also allow British Airways to move from its current location in Terminal 7 over to Terminal 8, allowing for an improved experience for customers connecting to/from American Airlines flights.

Atlanta closes airport smoking lounges

In order to comply with a new city-wide smoke-free ordinance, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport has shuttered all of its indoor smoking lounges. The new laws also prohibit smoking or vaping in the three restaurants at the airport that used to still allow smoking. Passengers who want to smoke will have to exit the secure areas of the airport and go outside in order to light up.

New premium escapes for travelers in 2020

Travelers will find more opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of busy departure terminals as a host of new lounges are slated to open in 2020. A new Centurion lounge and American Express Escape lounge opened this week at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. KLM passengers will find a renovated non-Schengen Crowne Lounge located between piers E and F at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Priority Pass recently opened eight new lounges in four different countries. New additions include two locations at New York’s JFK and one in Miami. A new lounge is available in both Cancun and San Cristobal Airport on the Galapagos Islands. In Russia, a new facility is now open at Pobedilovo Airport and in an industry first, Priority Pass has partnered with Russian Railways to add two lounges at train stations in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, the Plaza Premium Group said it will open its first U.S. lounge at Dallas Fort Worth airport in 2020. It will follow that with new lounges in Denver, Jakarta, Sydney, and Toronto in 2020-21.

PreCheck benefits coming to smaller airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been quietly extending some PreCheck benefits to smaller airports that don’t have enough volume to justify separate screening lines. At these airports, the TSA is operating what they are calling “blended lanes,” where eligible members of PreCheck will receive a special designator when going through the regular security screening line that will allow them to keep on their shoes, light jackets and belts while also keeping their laptops and travel-sized liquids in their carry-on bags. Travelers are urged to enter their unique Known Traveler Number in all airline reservations so that they may be eligible for PreCheck screening benefits where and when applicable.

However, the challenge is only available for 90 days and restrictions apply.

Delta offers an ongoing status match program that new customers can take advantage of as long as they can complete the designated challenge requirements. The carrier does not publish specifics on its program as status challenges vary, but interested travelers are invited to call AAdvantage customer service at 888-697-5636 for details.

Beautiful beaches and rich biodiversity at their best in Costa Rica

Get away this winter to a tropical paradise known for diverse landscapes and wildlife, thrilling activities, and sustainable tourism and progressive environmental practices. Costa Rica is calling.

Adelman’s Janice Mason recently traveled to Costa Rica to learn firsthand about Guanacaste Province, which is located in the northwest region of the country. Guanacaste, often referred to as the “Gold Coast,” boasts pristine shorelines skirting the Pacific Ocean, stunning mountain ranges and volcanoes, and several bio-diverse national parks and wildlife reserves where visitors can witness the intriguing flora and fauna or engage in a variety of adventures. For example,

Santa Rosa National Park is home to a rare dry tropical forest, surfing sites, and some 250 bird species. Playa Hermosa is popular for diving and water sports while Playa Blanca lulls visitors with its pleasing calm waters. Those looking for golf or other luxury resort experiences will find them, especially in the Papagayo Peninsula.

Janice visited several Guanacaste–area resorts during her stay in Costa Rica. Among her favorites was the all-inclusive family friendly Dreams Las Mareas, which is located in a remote area of the jungle. It features beautiful grounds, plentiful pools (including an adult pool), and beach area. Dreams Las Mareas offers a variety of activities on site, a large spa, five restaurants, and a buffet.

The Riu Guanacaste and Riu Palace are expansive resorts characterized with Hawaii-like landscapes. The gorgeous grounds at these beautiful resorts are graced with striking fountains, large pools, and spacious eating areas. According to Janice, “One of the major draws to the Riu resorts is that the Diamante Eco Adventure Park is right next door.” As Janice explains, “Many of the adventure tours are located in the interior of the country so visitors may have to travel a couple of hours to get there, but Riu guests have easy access to the Diamante Eco Adventure Park.” This ocean-front adventure area touts a zip line course nearly a mile-long with water views, a 30-foot free fall Quick Jump, and a hanging bridge over crocodiles along with dual lines allowing guests to ride side by side so they can share this exciting experience with family or friends. Diamante also boasts a large animal sanctuary situated in a lush tropical setting. The unique design of the habitats allows guests to view and learn about key aspects regarding the animals and their environment. Guests can also take an ATV tour on private trails or go horseback riding through the backcountry.

The Andaz by Hyatt was another of Janice’s favorite resorts. “It was beautiful and we saw Howler monkeys hanging out in the trees over the pool,” Janice said. This luxury family resort offers a European plan instead of being all-inclusive. It features regional cuisine with a mixology program and premium spirits selection. Janice also noted that it had one of the best spas that she had toured on her trip.

The JW Marriott resort was also impressive, according to Janice. It offers many ocean view suites, a beautiful beach, and excellent food, including a breakfast program for registered guests. The JW Marriott has the largest spa in Guanacaste and also features meeting facilities, and even an astronomy observatory.

Janice’s experience at the Planet Hollywood resort was exciting. “Characters from movies including Star Wars and Maleficent greeted us as a fun surprise!” Janice exclaimed. This modern new resort opened just over a year ago and features large rooms with scenic views of the bay. “Guests at the Planet Hollywood resort will enjoy great hospitality and beautiful grounds with numerous pools. The fun entertainment and delicious food was a real treat,” Janice noted.

Overall, Costa Rica is a great choice for those looking for a tropical vacation that offers more than just a lovely beach. It is home to six percent of the world’s biodiversity, even though the country only covers three percent of the earth’s surface, allowing visitors to really experience a variety of natural sites at its various parklands. Adventure seekers will find plenty of thrilling activities and visitors can relax and rejuvenate at one of the area’s fine resorts. For more information on Costa Rica, give Janice or one of our other experienced vacations consultants a call at 800-749-7116 or visit our website at www.adelmanvacations.com.
