Special Update

Four major storms impact travel US and abroad

There are four major storms that travelers should be aware of:

Hurricane Florence

Forecasters expect Hurricane Florence to make landfall likely between South Carolina and Virginia late Thursday and into Friday, September 13-14. The dangerous storm is then expected to stall over the Carolinas and Virginia bringing destructive winds, heavy rain and flooding for several days.

Most airlines serving airports in the expected impact zone (Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia) including Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, United and WestJet issued waivers for flights originally scheduled starting September 12 or 13 through September 16 or September 17.

Some airlines including American and Southwest are also offering waivers for flights to Baltimore and the Washington D.C. area.

Hilton has implemented a flexible change/cancellation policy for guests affected by Hurricane Florence for stays with arrivals September 13-17 regardless of travel destination.

Other travel suppliers may also be offering waivers or may extend their existing waivers as this storm continues to develop.

Hurricane Olivia

Adverse weather associated with Hurricane Olivia is impacting travel to/from/through the Hawaiian Islands through September 13.

Airlines including Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, United and WestJet issued waivers for flights originally scheduled September 10-13, depending on the carrier, to airports on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu.

Tropical Storm Isaac

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to intensify as it moves through the Lesser Antilles midweek. Forecasters say the storm will track between the islands of St. Lucia and Antigua before potentially heading to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Airlines including Air Canada, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, United and WestJet issued waivers generally for flights originally scheduled September 12-15, depending on the carrier, to potentially affected areas including Antigua, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Thomas Island.

Typhoon Mangkhut

After moving across Guam and Saipan NP, Typhoon Mangkhut is now heading toward the Philippines (arriving on September 15) and Hong Kong (arriving on September 16).

Airlines including United, which had issued waivers for Guam and Saipan, are still offering flexibility on changes through September 13.

Other airlines including American and Cathay Pacific have already implemented waivers for flights to Hong Kong between September 16 and September 17 or 18.

Note, other carriers may also offer waivers as they monitor the severity and track of the storm as other airports could be impacted as well.

With all of these storms, travelers are urged to closely monitor the local conditions and reconfirm the flight status of your specific itinerary. Travelers should be aware that waivers may be added or extended as needed. Check with your airline or your Adelman travel consultant for specific rebooking or cancellation options in regards to these waivers or for additional information.
