U.S. Government Shutdown and Travel Impacts

As a follow-up to our September 29th communication, we want to reaffirm our commitment to keeping you informed during the U.S. federal government shutdown that began on October 1.

The impact on most U.S. airports is currently limited, as most airport and security staff, as well as air traffic controllers, are classified as essential workers and continue to operate as usual.

However, the shutdown may still cause disruptions to business travel.

We want to ensure you and your travelers are informed and prepared. Below is an overview of how key areas may be affected. Please know that the situation may evolve depending on the duration of the shutdown.

Airports, TSA, and Air Traffic Control

Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff are considered essential workers and will continue working, though without pay. In past shutdowns, this has led to increased absenteeism, resulting in longer security lines and flight delays. We recommend arriving at the airport earlier than usual and monitoring your airline’s communications for updates.

Customs and Border Protection

The Department of Homeland Security staff, including Customs and Border Protection officers, are also classed as essential. Processing of international arrivals and passenger screening will continue as normal. However, slowdowns in processing are possible.

ESTA, Passport, and Visa Processing

  • ESTA: The Electronic System for Travel Authorization will continue to function as normal, as it is self-financing.
  • Visas: Foreign nationals applying for U.S. visas may experience delays if consular staffing is reduced.
  • Passports: U.S. passport services may be impacted, particularly if passport offices are located in federal buildings that close during the shutdown.

Amtrak Train Operations

Amtrak has confirmed that trains will continue to operate in the Northeast Corridor and across the country in the coming days and weeks. Amtrak receives public funding but is operated as an independent agency. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage all travelers to:

  • Review travel itineraries carefully and allow extra time for airport procedures.
  • Check visa/passport status and plan ahead for any international travel.
  • Stay flexible and consider refundable or changeable bookings when possible and within your company’s travel policy. · Use Adelman tools, such as our total trip management platform TripSource®, to stay updated on upcoming trips.
