The financially troubled Indian airline, Jet Airways has temporarily suspended all its domestic and international flights. The carrier had been looking for emergency funding but a consortium of lenders, led by the government-run State Bank of India has now informed the cash-strapped airline that they would not be able to provide more funding.

Jet Airways said it hopes the grounding of flights will be temporary as it will look for private investors. However, authorities say that required safety checks on the now-grounded aircraft would mean that it could take weeks before flights could be reinstated even if an investor can be quickly found.

Jet Airways said passengers would be informed about the closure via email and text messages, and would be able to apply for a refund.

Partner carriers including Delta and KLM also said they are working with customers who have booked code share flights that were to be operated by Jet Airways. Etihad, which owns a 24 percent stake of Jet Airways, is supporting passengers affected by the suspension of flights.
